Zambia Railways wagon carrying sugar derails in Lusaka, investigations commence

Zambia Police Service has instituted an investigation to establish the cause of the accident which occurred on Wednesday involving a Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) goods train.

Zambia Police deputy police public relations officer Danny Mwale said one of the wagons from Zambia Railways derailed and detached itself from the train in Lusaka’s Mazyopa Compound.

Mwale explained that the incident occurred on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 around 22:30 hours in Mazyopa Compound when the goods train was going to Kabwe from Lusaka.

The train operator, identified as Frobisher Ngoma aged 57 of Kafue Township reported that he noticed that the last wagon which was loaded with sugar was detached from the train when he arrived at Ngwerere Train Station and immediately alerted the Police.

Mwale said the Police officers followed up the report and discovered the derailed wagon in Mazyopa area where residents were found looting the sugar.

Officers dispersed members of the public who were found ransacking the sugar and secured the scene of the incident.
