Zambia has earned international recognition as a model for transformative community development through the Saemaul Undong initiative.
At the ongoing 2025 Global Saemaul Ministerial Meeting and Global Saemaul Leadership Forum, the country showcased its commitment to community-driven progress while contributing to the attainment of global development goals.
The forum has brought together leaders and representatives from Saemaul cooperative nations to reaffirm the initiative as a proven model for sustainable development and shared prosperity.
According to a statement issued on Friday discussions centred on aligning Saemaul principles with national rural development strategies, adapting the model to local contexts, sharing best practices, and strengthening international partnerships.
Leading the Zambian delegation, Ministry of Community Development and Social Services Permanent Secretary, Beatrice Chilomo, reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to building resilient communities through people-driven approaches.
She also represented the country at the UN-DESA–Saemaul Undong International Seminar, which focused on advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and enhancing local governance.
Zambia’s participation was further enriched by contributions from Saemaul Undong Zambia Coordinator Musonda Chisanga and a community leader from Nanduba Village in Chikankata District, who shared grassroots experiences of implementing community-led initiatives.
Now in its third year of implementation, the Saemaul Undong model in Zambia has recorded significant progress in transforming rural communities through the values of self-help, diligence, and cooperation.
Pilot villages such as Nanduba, Nansenga, Shakulya, and Mwachiyaba have reported improvements in infrastructure, water and sanitation, livelihoods, and overall community empowerment.
Through this approach, Zambia was demonstrating that rural communities can actively lead their own development journey while contributing meaningfully to global goals.
