The African Union (AU) has commended and acknowledged President Hakainde Hichilema for his outstanding leadership in the areas of Water Development and Digital Trade Promotion.

This recognition was expressed during the 47th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council, which officially opened on July 10, 2025, in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

The commendation follows Zambia’s successful hosting of the 3rd African Implementation and Partnership Conference on Water (PANAFCON-3), and the Digital Trade and Services Forum, in May 2025, according to a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday.

Further recognition was given for President Hichilema’s leadership in hosting a RoundTable Meeting in June 2025, in his capacity as the African Union Champion for Ending Cholera in Africa, organised by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (AfCDC).

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, said this in a speech read for him by the Minister Counselor at Zambia’s Permanent Mission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Tom Michelo.

Haimbe expressed gratitude to the AU for acknowledging President Hichilema’s continued efforts and leadership in advancing the objectives of Agenda 2063.

“President Hichilema is scheduled to present an implementation framework for the Africa Water Vision and Policy to the 39th Assembly in February 2026 for its consideration,” he said.

Additionally, Zambia emphasised the need to expedite the completion of the ongoing AU reforms aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the African Union and its related agencies.

The Executive Council meeting concluded on July 11, 2025, preceding the 7th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting between the AU, Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms, which will take place on July 13, 2025.
