Socialist Party youth leader, Muba’sa claims life in danger over anti-corruption stance

Socialist Party National Youth Secretary, Stanley Muba’sa, has claimed that his life was under threat following his party’s vocal condemnation of alleged rampant corruption under the United Party for National Development (UPND) government.

Muba’sa alleged that members of his party—especially those outspoken against government corruption—have faced intimidation and physical threats.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday, Muba’sa said that unlike in normal democracies where whistleblowers were protected, in Zambia speaking out against corruption often put one at risk.

He said the threats began after the Socialist Party held a protest on May 16, 2025, demanding the arrest of those allegedly involved in the theft of life-saving drugs donated by the United States government.

“The drugs, reportedly worth K1.4 billion, were meant for public health facilities but were allegedly looted,” Muba’sa said.

He cited remarks by U.S. Ambassador to Zambia, Michael Gonzales, who publicly criticized the government for failing to act against corruption in the health sector.

“The ambassador revealed that despite 33 meetings aimed at curbing the theft, no action was taken—revelations that left the administration nakedly exposed,” he said.

Muba’sa described the theft of the essential drugs as tantamount to mass murder, saying that those responsible were no different from serial killers, as they endangered countless lives.

He further claimed that he narrowly escaped a violent attack by a group in Kamwala, near Downtown Lusaka, shortly after the protest.

“One individual intervened and stopped the mob from assaulting me. A similar incident occurred a few days later, and my movements have been under surveillance ever since,” he said.

Muba’sa did not, however, say if the alleged attacks on him were ever reported to the police for investigations.
