Again, Hichilema condemns political violence, as opposition alleges intimidation

Against the background of recent alleged violent attacks on members of the opposition, President Hakainde Hichilema has warned that any acts of intimidation or lawlessness would not be tolerated ahead of next Thursday’s General Elections.

The statement follows allegations by National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity presidential candidate, Brian Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu that their motorcade was blocked and stoned in Western Province.

In a statement issued Tuesday August 4, 2026, President Hichilema said reports of disruptions to campaign activities were deeply concerning and should be addressed urgently.

“Let it be clear that violence, intimidation, or lawlessness by any political party, candidate, or supporter will not be tolerated,” President Hichilema said.

He stressed that every political party had a constitutional and lawful right to campaign within the period allocated by the Electoral Commission of Zambia.

“Anyone who attempts to disrupt or prevent that process is breaking the law and must face the full consequences,” the Head of State said.

Hichilema called on political leaders to take responsibility for the conduct of their supporters during the final days of campaigning.

“We therefore call upon all political parties and their supporters to conduct their campaigns peacefully, responsibly, and within the confines of the law,” he said.

He added that maintaining peace was critical to protecting Zambia’s democratic credentials and ensuring a credible election.

Hichilema concluded by emphasizing the need to protect the peace, unity, and democratic values that defined the country.
