Standards agency, tobacco board partner to strengthen tobacco regulation, consumer protection

0

The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) and the Tobacco Board of Zambia (TBZ) have agreed to work together to strengthen regulatory frameworks, promote compliance, and safeguard public health in the tobacco sector.

The collaboration will cover tobacco production, processing, and marketing, with a focus on protecting consumers and maintaining industry integrity.

ZCSA Executive Director, Gerald Chizinga, said the partnership would enhance transparency through data sharing, exchange of regulatory reports, and joint training programmes to boost technical skills and oversight capacity.

“It is important for government institutions to work together to enhance product safety, competitiveness, consumer protection, and industry efficiency. Regulatory agencies should not operate in isolation,” Chizinga said when TBZ Executive Director Robert Mwale paid a courtesy call on him on Tuesday.

The two institutions will also work to identify national standards in the tobacco industry that could be declared mandatory.

They are considering signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalise the arrangement.

Also present were ZCSA Board Secretary and Director–Legal and Compliance, Tafuna Mumba Phiri; ZCSA Communications Manager, Brian Hatyoka; and TBZ Corporate Affairs Manager, Lee Haamunji.
