Kambwili’s daughter writes President Hichilema, seeks compassionate pardon for father

Incarcerated former Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, Chishimba Kambwili’s daughter, Chanda, has appealed to President Hakainde Hichilema to pardon her father on compassionate grounds.

Contrary to the Human Rights Commission’s assessment after visiting Kambwili at Chimbokaila Correctional Facility, Chanda said her father’s health had continued to deteriorate rapidly.

In a letter addressed to President Hichilema, she stressed that her father’s condition was no longer just a concern but a crisis.

She said the prison environment, with its limited medical attention, was not conducive to his recovery, and that the family feared the worst with each passing day.

“I write to you not only as a concerned citizen of this great nation, but as a daughter helplessly watching her father’s health and spirit deteriorate behind the cold walls of Chimbokaila Prison,” Chanda stated.

She described Kambwili as not only a political figure but also a husband, father, and grandfather who had served the nation with passion and commitment.

Chanda emphasized that while justice must take its course, compassion must also prevail, especially when a life hangs in the balance.

Referencing sentiments by the late Dr. Sebastian Kopulande during the memorial service for former President Levy Mwanawasa, she highlighted his reminder that governance was not only about legality but also about morality and humanity.

She said Mwanawasa’s legacy of forgiveness and moral leadership, even towards adversaries, remained a source of pride and gratitude for the nation.

“Today, I find myself clinging to that same legacy. Your Excellency, you have demonstrated a compassionate spirit in the past, most recently in extending a hand of mercy to former Defence Minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba,” Chanda said.

She added that her appeal was not for political favor but a daughter’s plea for her father’s life, recalling similar instances such as President Hichilema’s acknowledgment of Dr. Katele Kalumba’s case.
