More than 40,000 residents of Kabanana are set to benefit from improved and reliable water supply as the Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company (LWSC) nears completion of works to connect the area to surface water.
This is according to LWSC Managing Director, Jilly Chiyombwe, in a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday.
Chiyombwa said Kabanana had relied on boreholes for years, which faced challenges such as drying up and inconsistent power supply.
To provide a more stable solution, he said LWSC is interconnecting the community to the surface water system from the Matero water tanks.
He explained that the project was funded under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) for Mandevu Constituency, which involved laying a 250mm, 2.8-kilometre pipeline from the existing line near SOS to the storage tank in Kabanana.

Chiyombwe said works were at 96 percent completion, with remaining tasks including a 90-metre stretch requiring rock breaking, minor road and pavement reinstatements, and final interconnection to the Kabanana tank.
He stated that the completion was scheduled for September 2025.
“Once commissioned, the system will deliver improved water pressure, longer supply hours, and more consistent service to households in the area,” Chiyombwe said.
He added that the project demonstrated LWSC’s commitment to providing safe and sustainable water to all communities.
Chiyombwe also revealed that LWSC was seeking financing for Phase Two, which will extend services to parts of the community not yet connected, in line with Zambia’s Vision 2030 and Sustainable Development Goal 6.
