A devastating fire swept through Kapalala Market in Ndola on Saturday night, destroying merchandise worth thousands of kwacha and leaving one person dead.
The blaze, which started around 21:00 hours, gutted stalls stocked with bags of beans, rice, maize, cassava, groundnuts, and other goods.
This is the third time in a year that Kapalala, Ndola’s largest trading centre, has suffered such destruction.

Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo, who toured the gutted market in the early hours of Sunday alongside Ndola District Commissioner Previous Njekwa, described the incident as tragic.

“As government, we express our sadness and convey a message to the people affected on behalf of President Hakainde Hichilema. We also send condolences to the bereaved family of the one person who died in the inferno,” Matambo said.
He assured the affected traders that the government, through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), would investigate the cause and provide support to victims.
Matambo also directed law enforcement agencies to swiftly establish the circumstances behind the repeated fires.
“This is sad, and as a government, we will walk side by side with the affected people,” he added.
