Lusaka farmer jailed 18 months for scamming job seeker

A Lusaka farmer who posed as a man with connections in the judiciary has been jailed for 18 months with hard labour after conning a desperate job seeker out of K11,440.

George Milambo Militu, 38, was sentenced by Magistrate Anna Holland after pleading guilty to obtaining money by false pretences.

The court heard that on February 5, 2025, Militu promised Daniel Matabali a job as a clerk of court at the High Court, claiming he could influence the recruitment process.

He persuaded Matabali to pay K11,440 in instalments, allegedly to be forwarded to the interviewing panel.

However, after receiving the money, Militu switched off his phone and the promised job never materialised.

Matabali later reported the matter to police, leading to the farmer’s arrest.
In mitigation, Militu pleaded for leniency, citing his three children, including a six-month-old baby, and vowed never to repeat his actions.

But Magistrate Holland rejected his plea.

“This is a serious offence. You obtained money by falsely pretending that you work for the Judiciary,” she ruled, before ordering him to serve 18 months with hard labour, effective immediately.

Militu was convicted under Section 309 of the Penal Code, which deals with obtaining money by false pretences.
