Mastercard, in partnership with Airtel Money, Network International has launched Airtel Money Global Pay, a virtual payment card that allows Zambians to make secure international and local transactions directly from their mobile phones.
This would allow customers to pay for goods and services globally without the need for a traditional bank account.
Speaking during the launch in Lusaka on Tuesda, Minister of Small and Medium Enterprise Development, Elias Mubanga, said the innovation supported government’s digital transformation agenda under the Eighth National Development Plan and the National Financial Inclusion Strategy.
“This initiative complements our push for digital transformation, women and youth empowerment, and inclusive growth. It will also allow young innovators and tech start-ups to access digital platforms and resources that were previously out of reach,” Mubanga said.
Mastercard Senior Vice President, Muhammad Nana, said the partnership seeks to expand secure digital payments in emerging markets, including Zambia.
“With Airtel Money Global Pay, consumers can make payments globally with greater convenience and security,” he said.
Airtel Mobile Commerce Country Director, Andrew Chuma, said the new service will make international payments more accessible to Airtel Money customers.
“Airtel Money Global Pay enables customers to shop, pay, and subscribe to international platforms directly from their phones,” he said.
Access Bank Deputy Managing Director, Bobbline Cheembela, said the bank’s involvement in the initiative aligned with the government’s efforts to enhance digital financial services.
The service, already launched in Uganda and Tanzania, is now available in Zambia, with plans for rollout in Gabon, Kenya, and Nigeria.
