Govt moves to tighten gun laws through Conventional Arms Control Bill, asks unlicensed gun owners to surrender them

The Zambian government has proposed stricter gun controls through the formulation and implementation of the Conventional Arms Control Bill, aimed at promoting transparency in the acquisition and ownership of firearms.

Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary, Maambo Hamaundu, said the bill was designed to ensure responsible gun ownership and prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands.

He made the remarks on Monday during the official opening of the Trainer of Trainers Workshop for the Arms Trade Treaty, held at Protea Marriott Hotel in Livingstone District, Southern Province.

Hamaundu emphasized that gun ownership must be subject to tighter regulation to safeguard national security and public safety.

“The government is strengthening the legal framework to ensure that guns do not fall in wrong hands. Guns must not be readily available to people with ill intentions as they can cause instability,” Hamaundu said.

He urged individuals in possession of firearms illegally to surrender them to authorities under the amnesty declared by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security.

Hamaundu further appealed for collective responsibility in addressing illegal gun ownership.

“Guns must be owned responsibly so that they do not cause harm in society,” he said.

The five-day workshop has drawn participants from across Eastern and Southern Africa and is being hosted by the Ministry of Defence.
