President Hakainde Hichilema has welcomed the recently signed ceasefire agreement that has led to the release of both Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, describing it as a significant step toward lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.

In a Facebook post on October 14, 2025, President Hichilema said the Zambian government viewed the development as a vital breakthrough, commending the mediation efforts of U.S. President Donald J. Trump and other world leaders.

“We welcome the signing of the ceasefire deal that has led to the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners,” he wrote.

Hichilema reaffirmed Zambia’s long-held belief that global peace and security were interconnected, stating that “instability anywhere is instability everywhere.”

He urged all parties involved to build on the momentum created by the ceasefire to pursue a durable solution that upholds peace, security, and dignity for all people in the region.

“Zambia reaffirms its long-held position that instability anywhere is instability everywhere, and urges all parties to build on this momentum toward lasting peace, security, and dignity in the Middle East,” Hichilema said.

According to the BBC, U.S. President Donald Trump, along with the leaders of Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, signed a declaration to bring peace to Gaza at a summit held in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh.

“A new and beautiful day is rising and now the rebuilding begins,” Trump said, praising regional leaders who helped cement the truce between Israel and Hamas.

Earlier, in an address to the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, Trump told cheering lawmakers that “the long and painful nightmare is finally over.”

As part of the agreement, Israel is releasing 250 Palestinian prisoners and more than 1,700 Palestinians detained during the two-year military operations in Gaza, in exchange for the last 20 living Israeli hostages held by Hamas. The exchange also includes the return of the bodies of 28 deceased Israeli hostages.

In Egypt, Trump appeared alongside Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi and over 20 other world leaders during the signing ceremony.

“Everybody’s happy,” Trump said, adding that while he had “done big deals before,” this peace accord had “taken off like a rocket ship.”

“This took 3,000 years to get to this point, can you believe it? And it’s going to hold up too,” he said.
Following the signing, President al-Sisi awarded Trump the Order of the Nile — Egypt’s highest honour — describing the day as “a historic milestone that ends an agonising chapter.”

Also present at the summit was Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who joined other world leaders for a group photo with Trump, less than a week after he had been blocked by the U.S. from attending the UN General Assembly in New York.
