President Hakainde Hichilema has honoured ten distinguished Zambians whose remarkable achievements and sacrifices have left an enduring mark on the nation’s progress, spanning mining, science, sports, media, and public service.

Leading the list of honourees was Dr. Sixtus Mulenga, who received the Grand Commander of the Order of Distinguished Service (First Division) for his pioneering role as an indigenous investor in Zambia’s mining sector.

With over four decades of experience, Dr. Mulenga has helped shape the country’s extractive industry through his technical expertise, innovation, and leadership.

A seasoned Mining Geologist and author, Dr. Mulenga is widely regarded as a stalwart of Zambia’s mining industry and the first Zambian investor to own a large-scale manganese mine in Luapula Province.

His career spans both local and international assignments, and he is celebrated for promoting sustainable mining practices and fostering strong stakeholder engagement.

He currently serves as Executive Director and Chairman of Kagem Mining Ltd, and Non Executive Director of AECI Plc, among others.

Dr Mulenga is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Musamu Resources Limited.

In the world of sports, former Copper Queens coach Bruce Mwape was awarded the President’s Insignia for Meritorious Achievement in recognition of more than 30 years of dedicated service to Zambian football.

Under his mentorship, the women’s national team rose to prominence, producing players who continue to make Zambia proud on the international stage.

Also recognised was Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Miracle Chipito, who earned national honours for winning a silver medal at the 2025 International Mixed Martial Arts Federation Championships — a historic feat that placed Zambia firmly on the international combat sports map.

The spirit of courage and selflessness was celebrated through the President’s Medal for Gallantry, awarded to George Siyuni (posthumously) and Bellington Mwape, a Power Tools Bus driver who saved 57 passengers when his vehicle caught fire.

Mwape’s heroic actions stood out as a symbol of bravery and humanity in the face of danger.

Science and innovation were also recognised, with Dr. Joseph Nkolola receiving the Order of the Eagle of Zambia (Third Division) for his groundbreaking research in vaccine development, including efforts to combat HIV and other diseases.

In the field of media, broadcasting legends Charles Mando and Cecilia Shinondo (posthumously) were honoured for their pioneering work at the Zambia Broadcasting Service, where their storytelling helped shape the nation’s post-independence media landscape.

Rounding off the list, freedom fighters Bukolo Mutoiwa and Bessie Chanda were both awarded the Order of the Grand Companion of Freedom — Second and Third Division respectively — for their selfless contributions to Zambia’s liberation struggle. Chanda was recognised for sacrificing her scholarship to join the independence movement.

President Hichilema said the honourees embodied the nation’s enduring values of patriotism, innovation, and service, adding that their achievements would continue to inspire generations to come.
