Socialist Party crisis spirals as Copperbelt youth chairperson quits, accuses M’membe of undemocratic conduct

Socialist Party (SP) Copperbelt Provincial Youth Chairperson, Warren Mulenga, has resigned from the party, citing what he described as increasingly undemocratic conduct by the top leadership under party president Dr. Fred M’membe.

In a letter dated November 2, 2025, addressed to the party’s Secretary General Dr. Cosmas Musumali, Mulenga said the Socialist Party was founded on the principles of collective leadership, justice, equality, and the defense of truth.

He, however, said those principles were now being undermined by a leadership that had allegedly become intolerant of internal criticism and allergic to accountability.

Mulenga stated that the centralization of authority in a few individuals had eroded the spirit of comradeship and replaced democratic engagement with fear and conformity.

“It is with a heavy heart but firm political conviction that I tender my resignation as Copperbelt Provincial Youth Chairperson of the Socialist Party, effective immediately.

This decision has not come lightly. It follows a period of deep reflection on the increasingly undemocratic conduct in the top leadership of the party,” he said.

Mulenga cited the unceremonious removal of National Youth Chairperson Kelvin Kaunda based on alleged fake Facebook stories, without any proper investigation or regard for the principles of justice and fairness.

He said such politically motivated actions, driven by personal vendettas and social media propaganda rather than truth and evidence, reflected a “tragic moral decline” in a party that claims to champion justice for the poor and marginalized.

“I cannot in good conscience continue to be part of a political structure that preaches socialism but practices authoritarianism, and that sacrifices truth and justice at the altar of personal ego. My loyalty has always been to the cause of the working people, not to personalities or propaganda,” Mulenga said.

He further urged party youths and members on the Copperbelt to ensure that the socialist struggle lives on through those who still believe in truth, justice, and people-driven politics.
