Zambia’s Under-17 national team capped an impressive group-stage campaign at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025 with a spirited 1–1 draw against four-time champions Brazil at the Aspire Zone on Monday night.

The result saw Zambia finish second in Group H with seven points — level with Brazil but behind on goal difference. Brazil topped the group with a +11 goal difference, while Zambia finished on +5.

In a match reported by the Football Association of Zambia, both sides advance to the Round of 16 after strong showings in the group stage.

Zambia started brightly, pressing high and showing confidence against their illustrious opponents.

Their persistence was rewarded in the 26th minute when Jonathan Kalimina calmly finished after a neat exchange of passes in the attacking third to give the young Chipolopolo a deserved lead.

Brazil struggled to impose themselves in the first half, with Zambia’s disciplined defensive shape and quick transitions keeping them on the back foot.

However, the South Americans regrouped after the break and found an equalizer in the 81st minute through Dell, who struck from close range following a defensive lapse.

Despite late Brazilian pressure, Zambia held firm to secure a historic draw — a result that underscored their tactical discipline and growing maturity on the world stage.

Head coach Dennis Makinka praised his players for their resilience and teamwork against one of the tournament’s top sides.

“Great character from the boys — they fought like I have never seen before,” Makinka said.

He stated that: “We conceded after a lapse in concentration, but I’m very proud of them. We told them to stay calm, keep the ball, and enjoy the game. The result will serve as a big morale booster.”

Goalkeeper Christo Chitambala, who delivered a composed performance, said the team would continue working hard as they aim to go further in the competition.

“We wanted a win, but we’re proud of our effort,” said Chitambala.

He said: “The fans should continue supporting us — we’ll keep pushing to bring the trophy home. It’s possible.”

Zambia conclude the group stage unbeaten, with earlier victories over Indonesia (3–1) and Honduras (5–2), scoring nine goals and conceding four. Their confident performances in Qatar have inspired fans back home and signaled the rising strength of Zambian youth football.
