Zambia Police takeover main opposition party, PF’s secretariat over alleged clash by rival factions

The Lusaka Police Command has said that it deployed officers to the Patriotic Front (PF) Secretariat on Lumumba Road to maintain community safety and prevent further violence.

Police Spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi, said the move follows an incident on November 15, 2025, around 16:00 hours, in which two people were assaulted by suspected UPND youths.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, Chilabi said the deployment is a proactive measure intended to ensure public security amid rising tensions.

“This decision was further necessitated by the continuous tensions and threats between the two rival PF camps concerning the control and occupation of the premises,” he said.

Chilabi said the police acted to prevent potential clashes, protect lives and property, and avert acts of malicious damage.

He added that the deployment aligned with Article 193 (2) of the Constitution of Zambia, which mandates the Police Service to protect life and property, preserve peace, maintain law and order, and ensure the security of the public.

“We therefore advise both parties to peacefully exhaust all legal remedies regarding the dispute, while the Zambia Police Service continues to monitor the situation to ensure the safety and security of the public,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Chilabi said investigations into the November 15 incident had been intensified, with efforts underway to bring the suspects and masterminds to book.

He assured the public that police would “leave no stone unturned” in ensuring the culprits face the law.

“We therefore appeal to members of the public who may have information that could assist in these investigations to come forward and cooperate with law enforcement officers,” he added.

Chilabi emphasized that public support was vital in enhancing community safety and promoting justice, and said updates will be provided as investigations progress.
