Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Jack Mwiimbu, has announced that Patriotic Front (PF) Acting President Given Lubinda is safe after being rescued by Zambia Police officers following an attack and alleged abduction in Kabwe.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka, Mwiimbu said police had launched investigations into a circulating video in which Lubinda appeared distressed and seemingly coerced by suspected political cadres.
“If the video was verified as authentic, it depicts serious crimes including abduction, assault, and coercion, all of which carry heavy prison sentences under Zambian law,” he said.
He stressed that the Zambia Police Service would investigate the matter with urgency to ensure accountability and uphold public safety.
Meanwhile, Citizens First party leader, Harry Kalaba, condemned the attack and alleged abduction of Lubinda in Kabwe at the hands of suspected United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres.
“This attack is not only disturbing but represents a dangerous and unacceptable shift in our political culture. If left unchecked, this emerging pattern of intimidation, violence, and lawlessness risks taking root in our country, threatening the democratic values we have protected for decades,” Kalaba said.
He warned that the rise of abductions, harassment, and intimidation must be stopped immediately, stressing that such acts tarnished Zambia’s image internationally and undermined its longstanding reputation as a beacon of peace and democracy in the region.
Kalaba called on the UPND leadership to publicly and decisively denounce political violence and ensure perpetrators were held accountable regardless of their affiliation.
“This violence must stop now. It has the potential to further escalate an already charged political environment, risking chaos and instability as the nation heads toward next year’s general elections,” he said.
He added that Zambia had for decades been celebrated for peaceful and orderly transitions of power—“a legacy admired both regionally and globally”—and urged that this record should not be sacrificed for political expediency.
