UPND youth activist, Mwenda, admits attack by cadres on PF presidential aspirant, Lubinda; calls for action against culprits

UPND youth activist, Don Mwenda, may have tacitly acknowledged that Patriotic Front (PF) presidential aspirant Given Lubinda was attacked by suspected ruling party cadres in Kabwe.

He has since called for swift action against all those involved.

A video circulating on social media shows Lubinda being violently pulled out of a meeting, with the PF claiming he was taken to an unknown location.

Mwenda urged government officials and senior party leaders to act decisively, warning that the situation reflected deeper problems.

“To the Provincial Minister and UPND Provincial Chairman Mwabashike Nkulukusa, Milner Mwanakampwe, the Permanent Secretary, the District Commissioner, and the Police Command in Central Province—Kabwe in particular—this message is not a request but a demand for immediate and uncompromised action,” Mwenda said in a Wednesday statement.

He described the assault on Lubinda as “an embarrassment to the party and an insult to the President’s clear directive against caderism.”

“This nonsense must end today,” he added.

Mwenda demanded that all those involved be identified and prosecuted, emphasising that there should be “no protection, no excuses, no internal shielding.”

“If we allow this culture of impunity to grow, then we must not deceive ourselves when the people punish us at the ballot in 2026,” he warned.

He further cautioned that indiscipline “had killed many parties before,” adding: “It will kill ours too if we continue treating it with softness.”

While not denying that the perpetrators were UPND youths, Mwenda insisted they acted individually and did not represent the party or its leadership.

He labelled their conduct as “reckless, criminal, and politically suicidal.”

To UPND youths, his message was blunt: power is temporary.

“The comfort you are enjoying today can disappear overnight if you continue abusing the party’s name. Others before you behaved this same way, and today they are forgotten, struggling, and full of regret,” Mwenda warned.

“Discipline is the only thing that will keep us in power, not violence, not intimidation, not caderism,” he said.

Earlier, PF presidential candidate Brian Mundubile said PF Acting President Given Lubinda had been attacked and abducted by suspected United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres.

Mundubile described the incident as disturbing, saying, “Patriotic Front Acting President, Hon. Given Lubinda, has reportedly been attacked and abducted by suspected UPND cadres.”

He called for immediate action from law enforcement agencies to establish Lubinda’s whereabouts and ensure his safety.

Lubinda was reportedly abducted in Kabwe where he was holding a mobilisation meeting ahead of the party general conference this month. Police are yet to issue a statement on the alleged incident.
