The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says it has recorded a total of 1,028,503 new voter registrations across the country, comprising 478,295 males and 550,208 females.
The Copperbelt Province recorded the highest number of new registrations at 165,848, followed by Southern and Lusaka provinces with 143,397 and 120,026 respectively.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer, Brown Kasaro, announced the figures during a media briefing at the Commission’s offices in Lusaka on Thursday.
Muchinga Province recorded the lowest number of new registrations at 46,209, while Northern and North Westernprovinces followed with 68,515 and 76,734 respectively.
Kasaro explained that updates to the voter register include transfers between polling stations, replacement of lost or damaged voter cards, and the removal of deceased voters from the system.
He said a total of 1,181,553 updates were recorded from phases one to six. The Copperbelt again recorded the highest number of updates at 168,754, followed by Southern and Eastern provinces with 165,027 and 153,825 respectively.
“The lowest updates were recorded in Muchinga Province at 63,316 with North Western Province at 84,098,” Kasaro said.
He added that the combined total for new registrations and updates in phases one to six stood at 2,210,056.
“I wish to thank stakeholders and the general public for the continued support and commitment shown in reinforcing the importance of participating in this Voter Registration Exercise,” Kasaro said.
He said the extended registration period provided an opportunity for more citizens to exercise their democratic right to register and subsequently vote.
“The Commission wishes to emphasise that, if you registered in 2020 or during the Continuous Registration of Voters and still have your voter’s card, you remain on the Register and do not need to register again,” he said.
He, however, noted that voters who had changed location or damaged or lost their cards should use the period to update their records and obtain replacements.
Kasaro added that to enhance accessibility, citizens may register at any open registration centre.
“Finally, I wish to reiterate our commitment to a transparent, inclusive and credible voter registration process, and we look forward to a successful conclusion of the exercise,” he said.
