PF Copperbelt district leaders demand date for elective convention, reinstatement of sacked officials

Patriotic Front (PF) district chairpersons on the Copperbelt have demanded that acting party president, Given Lubinda, announce a date for the long-awaited elective convention and reinstate recently dismissed central committee members.

Speaking at a media briefing in Kitwe on Sunday, Kitwe District Chairperson Evaristo Chilufya — who read a joint statement on behalf of PF officials on the Copperbelt — said continued postponement of the convention was creating confusion and weakening organisational structures ahead of the 2026 general elections.

“We have run out of what to tell the grassroots regarding the date of elections. We need to know when the conference will be held,” Chilufya said, adding that district structures needed clarity on the electoral college and who would be eligible to attend the convention.

The internal dispute follows Lubinda’s recent decision to postpone the elective conference indefinitely and remove several senior figures from the PF central committee, including party chairperson, Musonda Mpakata, and former secretary general Davis Mwila.

The move has heightened tensions within the former ruling party, whose activities have already been constrained by an injunction obtained by Mafinga lawmaker, Robert Chabinga, blocking the holding of any convention or party gathering.

Chilufya appealed to Lubinda to “forgive those who wronged him” and reverse the dismissals in the interest of unity.

“The acting president should consider forgiving those who wronged him and reinstate them for harmony to prevail in the party as we prepare for the forthcoming general elections in 2026,” he said.

He added that the leadership wrangles had pushed senior members to debate party matters on social media, describing the development as damaging and “uncalled for”.
