The Tonse Alliance has announced that it will participate in the upcoming Chawama parliamentary by-election and will field one jointly sponsored candidate through the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD), selected as the alliance’s Provisional Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV).
In a statement issued on Thursday, Tonse Alliance National Coordinator and Head of Secretariat, Dr. Chris Zumani Zimba, said the decision was unanimously endorsed by the Alliance Council of Leaders.
“This morning, the full Council of Leaders (Political Party Presidents, Civil Society leaders, the Clergy and Renowned Citizens) of Tonse Alliance met in Lusaka for its regular meetings,” Zimba said.
He added that the Alliance would, “soon or later,” revisit and announce the final SPV to be used for the 2026 presidential and general elections.
The Council meeting was co-chaired by Given Lubinda, PF Acting President and Tonse Acting Chairperson, and Dr. Danny Pule, Tonse Alliance Vice Chairperson and Christian Democratic Party President.
Zimba said the Council deliberated several national issues, among them Bill 7, and passed key resolutions.

He said the Alliance applauded the Oasis Forum, the church, civil society, scholars and citizens for their “progressive advocacy” against the Bill.
“The Alliance believes that the UPND government is undermining national unity through its arrogant and undemocratic actions of trying to impose Bill 7 on Zambians against the sound legal position of the Constitutional Court, the church, traditional leaders, civil society and many citizens across the country,” Zimba said.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) had set January 15, 2026, as polling day for the Chawama constituency by-election.
The announcement follows Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti’s declaration that the seat held by Tasila Lungu, daughter of former President Edgar Lungu, had fallen vacant under Article 72(2)(c) due to prolonged absence from Parliament.
ECZ Corporate Affairs Manager, Patricia Luhanga, also reminded aspiring candidates to meet the Grade 12 minimum qualification and pay the required non-refundable nomination fees.
