Police in Chikankata District have launched investigations after a small brown coffin with suspected charms was discovered at the gate of a farm in Chief Naluama’s area in the early hours of Friday.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Southern Province Commanding Officer, Moono Namalongo, confirmed the incident, stating that the matter was reported to Chikankata Police Station at around 10:30 hours by Kelvin Mombelela, 47, of Farm No. 193.

According to police, the coffin was discovered at about 05:00 hours by Ms. Sesetu Mombelela, 20, who had woken up to sweep the verandah at the family residence. While carrying out her chores, she noticed a small brown coffin placed near the farm gate.

“She immediately informed Mr. Kelvin Mombelela, who rushed to the scene and found that the gate, which had been closed the previous night around 20:30 hours by a farm worker, was wide open,” Namalongo said.

Namalongo said an inquiry file has since been opened and investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and the motive behind the act.

“More details will be communicated in due course,” he said.

Police have urged members of the public to remain calm and to report any information that may assist with the investigation.
