Zambia says it is committed to regional integration, trade facilitation, and economic transformation following the signing of the North–South Corridor Agreement and the Beira Development Corridor Agreement.

Transport and Logistics Minister, Frank Tayali, described the North–South Corridor as one of SADC’s most strategic infrastructure and trade facilitation programmes, noting that it remained a critical backbone for regional value chains, industrial development, and inclusive growth.

Tayali made the remarks during the signing ceremony held on Thursday at the SADC Secretariat Headquarters in Gaborone, Botswana.

“The Corridor is not merely a transport route, but a catalyst for enhanced connectivity, trade competitiveness, and economic integration across Southern Africa,” Tayali stated.

The Minister also announced Zambia’s interest in hosting the North–South Corridor Secretariat, should SADC Member States deem it appropriate.

He explained that Zambia’s candidature was anchored on its strategic geographical position at the heart of the Corridor, significant investments in transport and logistics infrastructure, a proven record of hosting regional institutions, and strong political commitment to regional integration initiatives.

Tayali further expressed Zambia’s readiness to provide the necessary institutional support and a conducive operating environment to ensure the effective functioning of the Secretariat for the benefit of all Member States.

He also welcomed the signing of the Beira Development Corridor Agreement, noting that the Corridor provides Zambia with the shortest route to the sea for its imports and exports.

“The Beira Corridor, together with the North–South Corridor and its linkages to other regional corridors, will enhance port-to-port connectivity, ease the movement of goods and people, and strengthen intra-regional and international trade,” Tayali said.

Speaking on behalf of the SADC Secretariat, Acting Executive Secretary Duduzile Simelane underscored the strategic importance of the North–South Corridor, describing it as the backbone of the SADC region.

“The Corridor links seven Member States, connects eight major corridors, carries approximately 60 percent of regional trade by volume, and directly serves about 50 percent of the SADC population,” she said.

Simelane commended the Zambian government for its commitment to the full operationalisation of the North–South Economic Corridor and for adhering to all protocols related to the signing and ratification of the Agreement.

The Secretariat also welcomed Zambia’s decision to sign the Beira Development Corridor Agreement, citing its importance in strengthening port-to-port connectivity between the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean through linkages with the Lobito Corridor.

Both parties expressed confidence that the effective implementation of the North–South and Beira Development Corridors would unlock significant economic opportunities, accelerate regional development, and position SADC corridors as key drivers of sustainable growth and integration.
