Strong support of Senegal to Morocco’s sovereignty in the Sahara

The Republic of Senegal reiterated, Monday, January 26 in Rabat, its firm and constant support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and its sovereignty over its entire national territory, including the Sahara region. This position was expressed in the Joint Communiqué sanctioning the work of the Major Moroccan-Senegalese Cooperation Committee, held under the co-chairmanship of the head of the Moroccan government, Aziz Akhannouch, and the Senegalese Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko.

According to the statement, the Senegalese side renewed its full support for the Moroccan initiative of autonomy, presented by the Kingdom as the only credible, serious and realistic solution for the settlement of the regional dispute around the Sahara, within the exclusive framework of the United Nations. Dakar thus reaffirmed the consistency of its position in favour of a political settlement based on Moroccan sovereignty and the parameters set by the United Nations.

Senegal also welcomed the adoption by the UN Security Council of resolution 2797 on 31 October 2025. This resolution enshrines, according to the joint communiqué, the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco as the only serious, credible and sustainable basis to reach a definitive political solution to this issue. Senegalese diplomacy welcomed the historical nature of this adoption, seeing it as a consolidation of the UN framework and a clarification of the basis of the political process.

The two sides stressed that this position is part of a broader convergence of views on major regional and international issues, based on respect for the sovereignty of States, their territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs. Rabat and Dakar reaffirmed their commitment to international legality and multilateral cooperation based on regional dialogue and stability.

This confirmation of Senegalese support comes in the context of a global strengthening of the bilateral partnership between Morocco and Senegal, marked by the holding of the Main Committee on Cooperation and the signing of several sectoral agreements. Beyond the diplomatic dimension, the two countries intend to consolidate a strategic relationship articulated around economic, political and human cooperation, in line with their common positions on major regional issues.
