The Bishops Council of Zambia (BCZ) has called on Zambians to uphold peace, unity, and coexistence as the nation heads toward the August 2026 general elections.

BCZ President, Bishop Martin Silwimba, said no political event or election outcome should divide the people of Zambia. He stressed that peace must remain the country’s guiding principle before, during, and after the polls.

Speaking during a media briefing held at the Church House Building in Lusaka, Bishop Silwimba urged political leaders to join the BCZ in promoting messages of peace and love throughout their campaigns.

“Election or no election, nothing should separate or divide the people of Zambia. We appeal to political players to join the Bishops Council of Zambia in preaching peace, love and coexistence wherever they go to campaign,” Silwimba said.

He further appealed to citizens to support the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral process, adding that trust in the electoral body was crucial to minimizing disputes.

Quoting John 17:21, Silwimba reminded Zambians that the goal of national unity should outweigh the desire to win elections.

“In the end, it’s not about winning or losing, but about maintaining peace and unity. That they may all be one,” he said.

Bishop Silwimba also urged government to increase budgetary support to the ECZ, noting that adequate funding was essential for civic education, voter sensitization, law enforcement, and the smooth administration of the elections.

He announced that the BCZ had organized a workshop aimed at educating voters, election observers and other stakeholders on the dos and don’ts before, during, and after the elections. The goal, he said, is to prepare the public to accept election results peacefully.

“The workshop, funded by member contributions, aims to promote peaceful coexistence and unity among Zambians. Together as one, building a united, peaceful and compassionate community,” Silwimba added.

He urged Zambians to avoid inflammatory statements and to embrace love and unity as the country heads to the polls on August 13, 2026.
