The Zambia Air Force (ZAF) says it will commemorate its 61st anniversary with celebrations centred on community engagement, humanitarian support and strengthened national partnerships, marking a major shift from its traditional approach.

ZAF Commander, Lieutenant General Oscar Nyoni, said this year’s programme was designed to place citizens at the heart of the Air Force’s commemorations, with the events expected to raise about K6 million for humanitarian and social development projects.

Speaking during the launch on Friday, he explained that a modern Air Force must not only guarantee national security but also create an environment in which socio-economic development can flourish.

He noted that Ndola was chosen as the host city because of its historical significance to the service. Activities will be centred at Peter Zuze Air Force Base, named in honour of Zambia’s first indigenous Air Force Commander, Lieutenant General Peter Zuze (Rtd).

Hosting the 2026 Air Force Day on the Copperbelt, he said, was also intended to strengthen ties between the ZAF, the business community and the general public.

Nyoni said the funds raised from the anniversary events would support a range of community projects in Ndola, including water recirculation initiatives, rehabilitation of the Mitanda Home for the Aged and the provision of classroom desks for a special needs school.

He urged chief executive officers and corporate leaders to participate as sponsors and exhibitors, stressing that national development requires collaboration between the Air Force, private sector and citizens.
