Fire has swept through the Fitness Factory Gym in Kitwe, destroying property worth thousands of Kwacha.
The blaze affected the gym’s spin class area, damaging 20 spin bicycles, three batteries, three inverters, ceiling boards, and part of the roofing structure.
According to the Kitwe City Council Fire Brigade, the incident occurred around 13:12 hours on Sunday when they responded to a fire alert at the gym, located in the Parklands area.
Kitwe City Council public relations officer Emmanuel Lupikisha said preliminary investigations suggested that the fire was caused by a burst inverter.
“No injuries were reported,” Lupikisha said, adding that: “Fire was promptly attended to and successfully extinguished by the Kitwe Fire Brigade, with support from Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) personnel, using two lengths of hose, with water drawn from the original tank,” Lupikisha said.

He noted that the quick response by firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading and causing further damage to other parts of the facility.
The Kitwe City Council has since urged business owners and the public to avoid overloading inverters and batteries, and to ensure that only qualified technicians handle electrical installations.
“Premises are further encouraged to install fire extinguishers and smoke detectors and to observe general fire safety guidelines at all times,” Lupikisha said.
