The European Union (EU) has confirmed its readiness to deploy an Election Observation Mission (EOM) to Zambia ahead of the 2026 General Elections, underscoring its continued commitment to supporting democratic governance and institutional strengthening in the country.

Speaking during the EU–Zambia Partnership Dialogue on Thursday, EU Ambassador to Zambia Karolina Stasiak said the bloc had received an invitation to observe the elections as part of its long-standing engagement in promoting good governance and democracy.

“As Zambia advances into its electoral year, we recognise the central role of strong institutions, transparency and public trust in democratic processes,” Stasiak said.

She explained that the purpose of the observation mission was to accompany Zambia through what she described as an important democratic milestone by offering an independent and professional assessment of the electoral process.

The mission’s recommendations, she noted, would contribute to long-term institutional strengthening in support of peaceful, free and fair elections.

Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, Mulambo Haimbe, reaffirmed government’s commitment to democratic governance, stating that Zambia remained steadfast in upholding transparency and accountability as it prepares for the 2026 polls.

“The Government of the Republic of Zambia values continued engagement with international partners. We welcome the European Union’s readiness to deploy an Election Observation Mission, consistent with past practice, as part of our shared commitment to transparency, accountability and credible democratic processes,” Haimbe said.

He added that such cooperation reinforced public confidence and strengthens Zambia’s democratic institutions.

Permanent Secretary for International Relations and Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen, said the Dialogue was guided by the Samoa Agreement, which defined the renewed partnership between the European Union and the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States for the next 20 years.
