The death toll from devastating floods in Malawi has risen to 22, as authorities race to assist thousands of affected families following days of heavy rainfall.

Officials say the country now requires about US$10 million to support relief efforts and restore essential services in flood-hit communities, according to a report by Cajnewsafrica.

The floods, triggered by persistent rains throughout last week, had affected more than 31,000 households—representing approximately 139,662 people—across 18 councils.

At least 1,164 people have been displaced and are currently being accommodated in 31 temporary camps.

Wilson Moleni, Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs, confirmed the rising casualties during visits to some of the worst-affected districts, including Mulanje and Phalombe.

“Unfortunately, we have lost 22 people, whilst 84 have sustained injuries,” he said.

Moleni added that government and humanitarian partners were providing emergency relief to affected communities, but warned that more resources are needed to prevent further deterioration of the situation.

“We require $10 million to restore basic services, prevent secondary disaster impacts and initiate early recovery interventions,” he said.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as efforts to assist affected communities and rebuild damaged infrastructure intensify.
