Kitwe Mayor, Mwaya Mpasa, Chipata Mayor George Mwanza, Roan Independent MP Joel Chibuye, and several Copperbelt councillors have officially joined the United Party for National Development (UPND), the ruling party, a statement from the party said.

The announcement was made at a meeting addressed by President Hakainde Hichilema at the Kitwe Cricket Club on Thursday.

Speaking to journalists, Mayor Mpasa, formerly a Member of the PF Central Committee, cited the UPND’s developmental agenda as her reason for joining.

“I have decided to join the ruling party because of its developmental agenda. We have seen free education, enhanced Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocations, and other initiatives,” she said.

Mayor Mwanza said government support for local development projects during his tenure as independent mayor influenced his decision to switch allegiance.

President Hichilema welcomed the new members, urging them to feel at home in the party. “UPND is your party. We are able to accommodate everyone; there is room for everyone,” he said.

Copperbelt UPND provincial chairperson, Elisha Matambo, said the party aimed to secure all parliamentary seats and wards in the upcoming elections, noting that more political crossings were expected as Parliament dissolves on May 13, 2026.
