The government says rehabilitation works on the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) are expected to begin soon, with Transport and Logistics Minister Frank Tayali assuring the nation that designs for the project are nearing completion.

Tayali said Zambians were eager to see progress following last year’s groundbreaking ceremony, which marked the start of the long-awaited revitalisation programme for the bi-national railway line.

He made the remarks in Lusaka on Saturday after meeting Sun Liqiang, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics on Sunday.

Tayali described the TAZARA project as “dear to the Government and the Zambian people,” saying its upgrade would significantly reduce the cost of transporting heavy goods once operational.

In response, Sun reaffirmed his company’s commitment, noting that rehabilitation works should commence without delay.

“China Railway Construction Corporation is almost complete with designs that will give TAZARA a new look,” he said.

Zambia, Tanzania and China signed the US$1.4 billion TAZARA Revitalisation Agreement on 29 September 2025.

The groundbreaking ceremony, officiated by Hakainde Hichilema and Li Qiang, took place in Lusaka on 20 November 2025.
