Social media in South Africa erupted after a 42-year-old truck driver was arrested following the seizure of a large consignment of explosives at the Beitbridge border post.

The operation, conducted on Friday, 10 April 2026, involved a multidisciplinary law enforcement team led by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks.

According to a report by Briefly, authorities intercepted the truck and, upon searching it, discovered thousands of blasting cartridges, connector capsules, and detonator fuse reels.

The total value of the explosives and the vehicle is estimated at nearly R2.8 million.

Hawks spokesperson, Avela Fumba, said the driver attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended.

He stressed that the interception sends a strong warning against the use of South Africa’s borders for trafficking dangerous materials.

Fumba added that the seized explosives posed a serious threat and could have caused widespread harm if not intercepted.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Musina District Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 13 April 2026, where he will face charges including possession of explosives.
