The United States reaffirmed on Wednesday April 29 2026 its recognition of the sovereignty of Morocco over the Sahara and its support for the Moroccan initiative of autonomy as “the only basis for a just and lasting solution” to this dispute. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said that at a press conference after his meeting in Rabat with Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
M. Landau also reaffirmed during the discussions with Mr. Bourita the constant support of the United States for the proposal of serious, credible and realistic autonomy of Morocco, which he characterized as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the territorial dispute concerning the Sahara.

The senior U.S. official stressed that the United States is actively working, with the UN and all parties, within the framework of the latest Security Council resolution [resolution 2797] with a view to reaching a solution to this conflict that has persisted for an unacceptable period of time, adding that the solution cannot wait indefinitely. He also mentioned during the talks the support of the United States to American companies that wish to invest and do business in the Sahara.
Speaking at the same press conference, the Deputy Secretary of State of the United States, Christopher Landau thanked President Donald Trump and His Majesty King Mohammed VI for their Vision and Leadership, a vision that propels our partnership of 250 years to new heights. During this period, the United States and Morocco have a shared history as strategic allies and valuable partners. Noting that the United States owns the oldest diplomatic building in the world in Tangier and the most recent will open Thursday in Casablanca.
Finally, the Deputy Secretary of State of the United States congratulates Morocco on joining the Artemis Accords. Morocco is the 64th country to sign the Accords to date, pledging its commitment to peaceful space exploration and use.
