Zambia raises diesel price for May, keeps petrol unchanged as global oil costs climb

The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has raised the pump price of diesel by K4.21 while maintaining petrol at K27.15 per litre for May, citing continued increases in international oil prices.

Diesel will now sell at K33.99 per litre, up from K29.78, a 14.14% rise. Petrol remains unchanged at K27.15 per litre.

Kerosene has increased to K35.05 from K32.26, while Jet A-1 has risen to K37.98 from K34.74.

ERB Board Chairperson James Banda said in a statement on Thursday that global oil prices continued to rise during the review period, driven mainly by heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

He said the price of petrol on the international market rose by 5.77 percent, climbing from US$114.51 per barrel to US$120.28.

Similarly, diesel jumped by 23.11 percent from US$162.61/bbl to US$200.19/bbl, while kerosene/Jet A-1 increased by 17.75% from US$169.92/bbl to US$200.08/bbl.

“In the same period, the Zambian Kwacha strengthened slightly against the United States Dollar, appreciating from K19.44/US$ to K19.16/US$, representing an appreciation of 1.44 percent,” he said.

He added that the stronger currency helped marginally offset the impact of rising global oil prices, which would otherwise have led to even higher domestic fuel costs.

Banda said the ERB had therefore revised pump prices to K33.99/litre for diesel, K35.05/litre for kerosene and K37.98/litre for Jet A-1.

The new prices take effect at midnight on April 30, 2026 and will remain in force until the next review.Zambia raises diesel price for May, keeps petrol unchanged as global oil costs climb.
