Three killed, five injured in separate road crashes across Lusaka – police

Three people died and five others were seriously injured in separate road traffic accidents recorded across Lusaka on Saturday, May 2, 2026, police said on Sunday.

Police spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi, said Twin Palm Police Station reported a fatal crash at around 06:30 hours on Twin Palm Road in which a juvenile pedestrian, Fazili Phiri, aged 10, of Ibex Hill, was hit by a BMW registration CAK 8552 driven by 38-year-old Juliet Wambili of Meanwood Chamba Valley.

The child sustained fatal head injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at Bauleni Clinic.

“The body is in the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Mortuary awaiting postmortem,” Chilabi said, adding that preliminary investigations indicate the driver turned without due care.

Lusaka Central Police Station recorded another fatal accident at about 19:40 hours along Lumumba Road near Simon Mwewa Market, where an unidentified male pedestrian, aged between 25 and 30, was hit by a Toyota Dyna truck registration BAZ 6832 driven by Costantina Hamoombe, 33, of Garden House.

“The victim sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at UTH. The body is in the UTH Mortuary awaiting identification and postmortem,” Chilabi said, noting that the pedestrian was crossing the road at the time.

Matero Police Station reported a third fatality at around 22:00 hours along Mungwi Road in Siyomunji area of Bob Brooms, Lusaka West.

An unidentified man, also estimated to be between 25 and 30, was struck by a Hyundai Santa Fe registration GRZ 840 CP driven by 46-year-old Lindiwe Mwale of Chalala.

“The pedestrian sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at UTH. The accident occurred when the pedestrian attempted to cross the road,” Chilabi said.

Several serious-injury crashes were also recorded: Makeni: 56-year-old pedestrian Moris Mwenya was hit by a motorcycle while crossing Kafue Road. He is admitted at Chawama Level One Hospital.

Zanimuone: A 17-year-old girl sustained serious injuries in a hit-and-run and is admitted to Matero Level One Hospital.

Leopards Hill Road: Two passengers were seriously injured when a Nissan Tiida collided with a stationary truck. Both are admitted to UTH.

Ngwerere: Catherine Zulu, 38, who was standing off the road, was hit after a driver failed to keep to his lane. She is admitted to Matero Level One Hospital.

Chilabi said investigations have been launched in all cases and several vehicles have been impounded for mechanical examinations.

He urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution, obey traffic rules and remain vigilant to prevent further loss of life.
