Yango Zambia commits K1.8 million towards reconstruction of Chiwempala Market

Yango Zambia, part of the global tech company Yango Group, has contributed K1.8 million toward the reconstruction of Chingola Market following the fire that destroyed goods worth millions of kwacha and affected more than 3,000 traders in the Copperbelt town.

The funds will be disbursed and managed by BeRelevant Afrika, a Zambian NGO responsible for disaster relief and support. The contribution was formally presented to the Chingola City Council for coordination and ceremonial purposes, in the presence of relevant government officials.

The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development said the contribution would assist ongoing efforts to rebuild one of the region’s key trading centres.

“For Yango to come on board and contribute toward constructing a new market is something we deeply appreciate,” said Sialubalo. “Chingola Market is important not only to traders in the area, but also to the wider trading network connected to the Copperbelt. This contribution will help support the construction of a stronger and more resilient facility.”

The fire disrupted trading activity and affected livelihoods for thousands of traders who depend on the market for daily business operations.

Country Head for Yango Zambia, Kabanda Chewe said the company chose to contribute toward rebuilding the market to help restore commercial activity in the area and hope for many Zambians.

“Markets play an important role in local economies and provide income for thousands of families,” said Chewe. “The reconstruction of Chingola Market will help traders resume operations and support economic activity within the community. At Yango, we already see the important role small businesses and informal traders play in Zambia’s economy through the earning opportunities created on our platform and the growth of local merchants through delivery and food delivery services. This is why we are committed to supporting the market and the communities that depend on it.”

Yango said the contribution forms part of its broader community initiatives in Zambia focused on education, youth development, and community programmes.

Recent initiatives include the second cohort of the Yango STEM Fellowship, support for the Nkhata Africa football tournament in Kalingalinga, sponsorship of the BeRelevant Youth Summit, and participation in the EGYD Career Fair.
