Zambia’s power utility company ZESCO Limited, has started implementing a programme to provide 12,200 subsidised electricity connections to low-income households and eligible micro and small enterprises in selected districts across four provinces.

The initiative is being carried out under the Sustainable Electricity Supply Southern Division (SESSD) Project with support from the European Union, Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau and the Agence Française de Développement.

According to a statement issued by ZESCO on Friday, the subsidised connections will be implemented between May 18, 2026 and February 28, 2027 under the project’s access component.

The programme targets 31 townships in eight districts namely Kabwe, Sinda, Nyimba, Petauke, Katete, Kazungula, Livingstone and Mongu.
Under the initiative, eligible customers will pay K150 for electricity connections, with the subsidy financed through a grant from the European Union.

“The programme was intended to improve access to electricity, support economic activity and reduce poverty in targeted communities,” ZESCO said.

The utility company has encouraged interested applicants seeking standard electricity connections to visit area offices for information on eligibility requirements and implementation schedules.

The project will also include upgrades to electricity distribution and transmission infrastructure through the rehabilitation and construction of substations, expansion of transmission and distribution lines, and reinforcement of existing networks ranging from 11kV to 132kV.

In Southern Province, the project will cover communities in Kazungula and Livingstone including Mambova, Machenje, Chimbinde, Makalanguzu, Linda Maloni, Libuyu F&G and Mulala.

Beneficiaries in Western Province include communities in Mongu such as Mbuywana Stage 4, Nalongo, Nalwenge, Katongo and Mutwiwambwa.

In Eastern Province, the programme will target selected communities in Katete, Sinda, Petauke and Nyimba.
Meanwhile, selected areas in Kabwe in Central Province including Kalundu, Kafulamase, Kizito, Kamuchanga, Ntase and Shangombe are also expected to benefit.

ZESCO said the SESSD project forms part of wider government efforts to expand electricity access and strengthen energy infrastructure across the country.
