Forum demands respect for Electoral Commission of Zambia, charges body to remain professional, neutral

The Civil Society Election Integrity Forum of Zambia (CSEIFZ) has called on political parties, candidates, and stakeholders to engage the Electoral Commission of Zambia ( ECZ) with respect and restraint ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Solomon Ngoma, the CSEIFZ Chairperson said respect for the ECZ was essential for credible elections and warned against undermining the institution while participating in the process it manages.

Ngoma in a statement issued in Lusaka on Saturday stressed that ECZ Commissioners were not political cadres but officials appointed to protect and manage the electoral process.

He cautioned that questioning their impartiality without proof erodes public trust in Zambia’s democracy.

“Calling them ‘UPND cadres’ or questioning their impartiality without proof is irresponsible and damages the trust that citizens must have in our democracy,” Ngoma said.

He also directed CSEIFZ’s appeal at media houses, urging them to act responsibly in their coverage of electoral matters.

Ngoma said giving airtime to individuals who insulted ECZ officials was unfair and weakened confidence in the Commission.

“Media institutions must play their role in protecting democracy by refusing to spread disrespectful or misleading attacks against election officials,” he said.

Ngoma further warned international observers to be vigilant against false information, which it said had become common in Zambia.

He urged observers to verify information with the right authorities, civil society organisations, or other credible election stakeholders before drawing conclusions.

“Elections should not divide us or cause conflict, but should give citizens the chance to choose their leaders in a peaceful and respectful environment,” he said.

Ngoma reminded the ECZ to remain professional and respect the will of the Zambian people, and advised it to stick to its timetable to avoid uncertainty over date changes.
