The Ministry of Defence has assured the nation that Zambia will remain peaceful before, during and after the August 13, 2026 General Elections, with the Zambia Defence Force committed to maintaining security and stability throughout the electoral period.
Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary, Maambo Haamaundu, said the Defence Force will execute its constitutional mandate of protecting citizens while remaining professional, disciplined and impartial during the elections.
Speaking when a delegation from the Levy Mwanawasa Regional Centre for Democracy and Good Governance paid a courtesy call on him in Lusaka on Friday, Haamaundu stressed that the military would not interfere in the electoral process.
He said the Defence Force would instead work closely with relevant authorities to ensure the elections are conducted in a peaceful and lawful environment.
“Zambians will exercise their rights freely during these elections just like they have done in various elections before. Our focus is for the elections to be conducted in a peaceful and stable environment,” Haamaundu said.

He also commended the Levy Mwanawasa Regional Centre for Democracy and Good Governance for its continued efforts in promoting democracy and good governance across member states.
Haamaundu described the institution as a trusted partner in electoral preparedness and welcomed its engagement ahead of the 2026 polls.
Meanwhile, Director of the Levy Mwanawasa Regional Centre for Democracy and Good Governance, Jean-Paul Kimonyo, said Zambia remained a shining example of peace and stability on the African continent.
Kimonyo said the country’s long-standing record of peaceful coexistence since independence demonstrated its strong democratic foundations.
The delegation is currently in Zambia to conduct a pre-electoral analysis ahead of the August 13, 2026 General Elections.
The assessment will help the organisation prepare an Election Observation Mission to be deployed in the country before the polls.
