Police in North Western Province have arrested former Chavuma Constituency lawmaker, Victor Lumayi, and other suspects for going armed in public at nomination centres in Chavuma and Kalumbila districts, ahead of the August 13 general elections.

Police detained Lumayi for the offence of going armed in public after apprehending him on May 24, 2026, around 17:30 hours in Chavuma District.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said on May 20, 2026, around 08:30 hours, at the Chavuma District Council Offices, which were being used as a nomination centre for Chavuma Parliamentary Constituency, the suspect entered the premises while armed with a firearm without lawful authority.

Chilabi said this caused fear and alarm among members of the public.

He said Police in the area recovered One Taurus pistol and 14 rounds of ammunition from the suspect.

“The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon,” Chilabi said

In a separate but related incident, police in Kalumbila District arrested Redson Sisala, aged 45, of Kalumbila, for the same offence under Section 84 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

He said the suspect was found in possession of a 9mm Girsan pistol and ten (10) rounds of ammunition.

Chilabi said the incident occurred on May 21, 2026, between 13:30 and 14:00 hours at Kalumbila Town Council Civic Centre, which was being used as a nomination centre for Parliamentary and Mayoral candidates by the Electoral Commission of Zambia.

“It is alleged that the suspect was seen carrying a firearm, causing panic and disrupting proceedings,” he said.

Sisala has since been released on police bond, pending court appearance.

In the same incident, seven other suspects in Kalumbila District were arrested for idle and disorderly conduct, contrary to Section 178(f) of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
