‘Morally inappropriate to hold memorial before burial,’ church group distances self from alleged Lungu memorial plans

The Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) has directed all its structures, affiliates, and member churches to stay away from proposed nationwide memorial activities for late President Edgar Lungu, citing moral and procedural concerns ahead of his burial.

In a letter dated June, 3, 2026 signed by EFZ Executive Director, Reverend Allan Kasung’ami, the Fellowship said no provincial fellowships or congregations should organize, endorse, facilitate, or participate in such events “at this stage”.

EFZ’s position comes amid heightened public debate following the death of Mr. Lungu, who passed away on June 5, 2025 while receiving medical treatment in South Africa. His death triggered an outpouring of tributes across the country and region.

Mr. Lungu, 68, served as President from January 2015 to August 2021 and led the Patriotic Front (PF) and was known for major infrastructure projects, constitutional reforms, and a combative political style that defined Zambia’s post-Michael Sata era.

After leaving office, Mr. Lungu largely retreated from active politics but remained an influential figure within PF circles.

His health deteriorated in recent years, culminating in his death abroad, which left unresolved questions about repatriation, state honors, and burial arrangements.

The impasse over where and how Mr. Lungu should be buried has drawn in the family, Government, and various political actors.

Disagreements over protocol, venue, and the role of the State have delayed a dignified send-off, prompting calls from church and civil society groups for restraint and unity.

It was against this backdrop that EFZ said it was morally inappropriate and premature to hold nationwide memorial observances before burial had taken place, emphasizing that it had already communicated this stance to the organizers.

“EFZ further warned affiliates against events presented as powered by the Church or “the Body of Christ” without consultation and authorization from recognized mother bodies,” said EFZ through Kasung’ami.

He called such representations potentially misleading and not reflective of the collective church position.

Kasung’ami stated that all EFZ affiliates and church leaders were accordingly requested to refrain from associating themselves with such initiatives and to communicate the guidance within their respective networks.

“Despite the directive, EFZ continues to stand in prayer with the bereaved family and the nation. EFZ remains actively and earnestly engaged with both the family and Government to encourage every effort toward a dignified burial,” he said.

Kasung’ami expressed hope that the matter would be resolved in a respectful and honorable closure well before the forthcoming elections, for the healing of the family and the unity of the nation.
