Netherlands investors eye Zambia’s critical minerals sector

The Netherlands has expressed growing interest in boosting investment and cooperation with Zambia in the critical minerals sector, citing rising global demand for minerals used in the clean energy transition.

Dutch Deputy Ambassador for Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, Ilyaas Sherally, said the Dutch Embassy had recorded a significant increase in inquiries from Dutch companies seeking investment opportunities in Zambia’s mining industry.

Sherally made the remarks on Wednesday during a courtesy call on Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary Dr. Hapenga Kabeta in Lusaka.

“The Netherlands is working to better understand Zambia’s critical minerals landscape in order to guide prospective investors on available opportunities, potential risks, and areas requiring technical expertise,” Sherally said.

He added that the Netherlands supported regional infrastructure development through the European Union’s Global Gateway initiative. Improved transport corridors would enhance mineral value chains and unlock greater investment opportunities, he said.

Sherally stated that the Netherlands was keen to support initiatives promoting local mineral beneficiation, value addition, and domestic mineral processing to generate greater economic benefits for Zambia.

Dr. Kabeta said government remained committed to identifying areas of collaboration that would strengthen the mining sector.

“This will be done while fostering sustainable economic growth and mutually beneficial partnerships with the Netherlands,” Kabeta said.

He reaffirmed government’s commitment to transforming Zambia’s mining industry through increased investment, environmental protection, value addition, and the formalization of artisanal and small-scale mining.

Kabeta encouraged local and international investors to explore opportunities in mineral exploration, mine development, renewable energy, mineral processing, and manufacturing.

“Zambia remains committed to providing an enabling environment for sustainable investment in the mining sector,” he said.
