The Zambia Police Service and the Department of Immigration have confirmed a shooting incident involving an allegedly armed immigrant that occurred at approximately 08:30 hours on August 1, 2026 at the Kafue Security Checkpoint.
Police Spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi and Department of Immigration Chief Public Relations Officer, Namati Nshinka said during routine immigration checks, officers from the Department of Immigration intercepted a male suspect travelling from the northern to the southern direction.
In a joint statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday, Chilabi and Nshinka said the suspect produced a National Registration Card (NRC) suspected to be fraudulent.
The duo said while conducting further checks, Immigration Officers observed that the suspect was armed and called for police reinforcement.
“Before he could be secured, the suspect fled from the checkpoint and opened fire at an Immigration Officer, who was pursuing him. The suspect continued firing while fleeing, posing an imminent threat to officers and the public,” they said.
Chilabi and Nshinka said approximately 200 metres from the checkpoint, a Police Officer engaged the armed suspect, who sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
The duo said a firearm loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition was recovered from the deceased.

Preliminary investigations indicate that four rounds were discharged, while nine live rounds were recovered from the scene and secured as exhibits.
“The body has been deposited at Kafue General Hospital Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination,” they said
Preliminary records further indicate that the deceased is believed to be the same individual who escaped from lawful custody following an earlier apprehension by Immigration officers on 19th March 2026.
Investigations into the suspect’s identity and nationality are ongoing, although the recovered NRC is suspected to be fraudulent and preliminary observations suggest that the deceased may not be a Zambian national. Authorities are conducting forensic examinations to establish his true identity.
Police have since commenced investigations into the shooting in accordance with established procedures, while the Department of Immigration is conducting parallel inquiries into the immigration aspects of the case.
