Netizens mourn Kafwaya, say earlier warnings were dismissed

Social media was flooded with grief, shock and debate after police confirmed that former Lunte Member of Parliament and former Cabinet minister Mutotwe Kafwaya had died after being shot during a joint security operation in Kabulonga.

Thousands of Facebook users expressed sadness over Kafwaya’s death, while others reflected on opposition presidential candidate Brian Mundubile’s earlier account of the operation, saying it had initially been dismissed or mocked.

One of the most widely shared comments came from Charles Chipango, who wrote: “They thought BM8 was doing comedy when he was giving a statement. Crying for my mother Zambia.” The post attracted hundreds of reactions.

Sydney Chisoko echoed the sentiment, saying people had mocked Mundubile when he narrated what had happened and were now doing the same over reports surrounding Kafwaya’s death.

Others called for restraint and urged Zambians to avoid speculation until all the facts surrounding the incident are established.

Thelma Mugala commented: “Something serious must have been going on, let’s stop speculating what we don’t know.

Several users focused on the loss of life rather than the politics surrounding the incident.
“Very sad development,” wrote Maxwell Simwanza, while Paul Chikapa Mukwato simply posted: “Sad.”

Cuthbert Curtis Mutakwa added: “Lost life, sad reading no matter what.”

Some users questioned the circumstances surrounding the operation.

Samuel Mubita asked: “What were they doing with ex-commandos with military grade guard equipment?”

Others suggested there were unanswered questions.

“There is more to this story… the mission was bigger than what an ordinary Zambian can see,” wrote Seems N Sikangila.

Dumase Katongo shared an African proverb, writing: “The dance of a mad man can only be funny if he is not your relative,” suggesting that issues often dismissed by outsiders become painful when they affect loved ones.

Lizzie Kanyimbo Chihana reminded fellow citizens that political power is temporary, urging leaders to treat people well because “a life lost can never be replaced.”

Sky Innocent Chanda said he believed Mundubile’s narration was gradually being vindicated as events unfolded, while expressing condolences to Kafwaya’s family.

The online discussion reflected a nation divided between those demanding answers over the operation, those urging caution against speculation and many others simply mourning the death of the former lawmaker.

Police say Kafwaya was fatally wounded during a joint security operation at a residence linked to opposition leader, Brian Mundubile, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.
