Zambia’s Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has approved 33 licence applications, three construction permits and various licence amendments representing an investment commitment of about 1.0 billion Kwacha ($50.9 million), the regulator said on Wednesday.
The approvals were granted at the ERB Licensing Committee meeting held on Sept. 11, ERB Manager for Public Relations, Namukolo Kasumpa said in a statement.
The approvals cover the petroleum, renewable energy and electricity sub-sectors.
In the petroleum sector, the ERB approved 13 licences for the distribution, importation and exportation of petroleum products, seven licences for transportation, one licence covering the importation, packaging, blending, distribution and exportation of lubricants, and three retail licences.
“Approvals granted at the ERB Licensing Committee meeting on 11th September 2026 reflect investor confidence in Zambia’s energy sector and underscore the ERB’s commitment to efficiency, transparency, and timely licensing,” Kasumpa said.
The regulator also approved the construction of three petroleum retail service stations and the operation of one newly acquired station.
A total of 42 road tank vehicles were also licensed to support the transportation and distribution of petroleum products across the country.
In the renewable energy sub-sector, the ERB approved eight licences for the manufacture, supply, installation and maintenance of renewable energy generating equipment.

“These approvals support the continued development and uptake of renewable energy technologies in Zambia,” Kasumpa said.
In the electricity sub-sector, the ERB approved one licence for the generation, distribution and supply of electricity, supporting investment in electricity services and infrastructure.
Kasumpa said the licences and permits had been issued in accordance with the Energy Regulation Act No. 12 of 2019 and other applicable regulatory requirements.
“The ERB remains committed to regulating the energy sector in the public interest, with a sustained focus on safety, efficiency, consumer protection, compliance and sustainable development,” Kasumpa said.
