Zambia targets investment, peace architecture at UNGA81

Zambia will seek to mobilise technical assistance, development finance and strategic investment while aligning United Nations programmes more closely with its national priorities during the 81st UN General Assembly, the government said.

The government will also seek support for a National Architecture for Peace, establish diplomatic relations and strengthen Zambia’s influence within the multilateral system.

According to a statement issued by Namatama Njekwa, First Secretary for Press and Public Relations at the Permanent Mission of Zambia to the United Nations, Zambia’s participation in UNGA81 would focus on advancing the Grow Zambia Agenda.

Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe arrived in New York on September 20 to lead Zambia’s delegation to the session, which enters its high-level General Debate from September 22 to 28. The UN said the 81st session is being held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”

“Honourable Mulambo Haimbe, S.C., M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, has arrived in New York, United States of America, to participate in the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly,” reads the statement.

Haimbe is representing President Hakainde Hichilema and is accompanied by Health Minister Professor Roma Chilengi and senior government officials.

The Mission said the session provides Zambia with an opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to peace, democracy and stability following the recent general elections.

It said Zambia was also seeking election to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027 to 2029 term, which the government says reflects its values and commitment to peace and democracy.

“The Minister will reaffirm Zambia’s unwavering commitment to constitutionalism, the rule of law, fundamental freedoms and the protection of human rights, and will underscore Zambia’s candidature to the HRC for the term 2027 to 2029 as a reflection of these values,” the Mission said.

Haimbe is expected to participate in the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, where Zambia serves as deputy chair, as well as meetings of the Group of 77 and China.

The delegation is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with several countries and other partners, with discussions expected to focus on strengthening partnerships, promoting investment opportunities in Zambia and advancing the country’s strategic priorities within the multilateral system.

Zambia will also advance priorities under the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact and the Seville Commitment, which focus on multilateralism, digital cooperation and financing for sustainable development.

Haimbe is scheduled to deliver Zambia’s National Statement on behalf of the Head of State during the High-Level General Debate on September 28.
