Police detain two siblings over alleged murder of cousin in Lusaka

Police in Lusaka have detained two siblings, aged 18 and 15, in connection with the alleged murder of their 22-year-old cousin, Susan Zulu.

The case follows a report of Conversion Not Amounting to Theft of a Motor Vehicle made at Kabwata Police Station on September 17, 2026, involving a silver Toyota Axio belonging to the siblings’ parents.

Police Spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi, confirmed the matter in a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday.

Preliminary investigations indicate that on September 17, the 18-year-old allegedly took the vehicle without his parents’ consent and was accompanied by his 15-year-old sister and their cousin.

Later that day, the vehicle was involved in a hit-and-run accident along Zimba Road in the Madras area, in which an eight-year-old pedestrian sustained multiple injuries and was admitted to the University Teaching Hospital in critical condition.

Chilabi said the vehicle was involved in another accident along Lumumba Road on September 18, after which the three occupants abandoned it.

“On 21st September, the two siblings returned home while Susan remained unaccounted for. Their parents later took them to Kabwata Police Station in connection with the motor vehicle case,” he said.

During police interviews on September 22, the two siblings provided information that led officers to the Mungule area in Chibombo District to establish Susan’s whereabouts.

Chilabi said officers were informed upon arrival that members of the public had discovered the body of an unidentified female in the area at around 10:00 hours on September 21.

Officers from Ngwerere Police Station collected the body and deposited it at the University Teaching Hospital Mortuary.

Relatives later identified the body as that of Susan Zulu.

“The body had visible injuries which preliminary investigations suggest may have resulted from an alleged physical confrontation between the deceased and the two siblings,” Chilabi said.

He said the body remained at the mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death, as investigations continued.
