President Hakainde Hichilema has urged the current generation of African leaders to prioritise inclusive economic growth grounded in transparency and sound fiscal management.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page on Sunday, May 25, 2025, to commemorate African Freedom Day, President Hichilema stressed the importance of development that creates jobs and opportunities for all Africans—especially the youth and women, whom he described as the backbone of the continent’s future.
He reiterated that Zambia’s foreign policy remained rooted in peace, security, and stability, as well as economic diplomacy that fosters intra-African trade and global cooperation.
“We continue to advocate for a more equitable international financial architecture—one that no longer reinforces historical inequalities but enables Africa to define its own path to sustainable development,” he wrote.
The President further emphasized that Africa must silence the guns and invest in peace, warning that instability anywhere on the continent affects the whole region.
“Africa cannot afford to be divided by conflict when the dream of unity and prosperity is within reach,” he said.
President Hichilema reaffirmed Zambia’s solidarity with the continent in commemorating Africa Freedom Day, describing it as a time to reflect on shared history, honour the sacrifices of freedom fighters, and renew the commitment to building a better, more prosperous Africa.
He called on African leaders to recommit to the Pan-African spirit, saying, “We are one people, one continent, with one destiny.”
President Hichilema also marked the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the precursor to today’s African Union (AU), paying tribute to liberation heroes such as Kenneth Kaunda, Julius Nyerere, and Kwame Nkrumah, among others.
