The government has launched an investigation into a suspected water pollution incident in the Kafue River in Chililabombwe, warning industries against activities that may endanger the country’s water resources.
Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Collins Nzovu, confirmed on Thursday that Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited (MWSC) had temporarily shut down the Kafue Raw Water Pump Station as a precautionary measure to allow for detailed investigations.
Nzovu said the move followed reports of unusual turbidity in the raw water supply, prompting immediate sampling and laboratory testing.
“While preliminary test results are inconclusive, detailed assessments are ongoing in collaboration with regulatory bodies and independent laboratories to determine the nature and source of the contamination,” the minister said in a statement.
In the meantime, MWSC has switched to supplying water from underground dewatering operations, which authorities have confirmed is safe for public consumption.
Nzovu reassured the public that stringent monitoring and safety protocols remain in effect, adding that government regards any threat to water quality and environmental integrity with utmost seriousness.
A full, transparent investigation is underway, and the minister warned that any parties found responsible will be held accountable under national environmental and public health laws.
“Pollution of natural water bodies not only disrupt essential services but also poses serious risks to ecosystems and human life. We strongly caution all stakeholders, particularly industrial operators, against any actions that could compromise our water resources,” he said.
Nzovu urged the public to remain calm and said regular updates would be issued as investigations continue.
